TEST GRADIENT ASPEN 3 Some translations of the test from Aspen3 in ParapenteMag (Philipe Lami). Always difficult to translate due to his poetic writing style. Nevertheless I think I came very close with this translation.
Start: The Lines got the tendency to curl, what attention requires with sorting out the Lines. It starts easy and light. Like the Aspen2 you have to apply a little break.
Flight: It takes speed very quick. 39 km/h hands up, (size26 middle of the weightrange with a closed harness). Full speed 55km/h and the wing remains solid. The wing seems to be more stable when applying more speed. The break pressure is very light: less then 1,5 kg with 50% break travel, with very smooth reactions. Weight shifting is remarkably effective. The wing remains stable and is very easy to control in pitch and roll. The wing bites into the air and never rocks back. In thermals it accelerates naturally into the right direction and is extreme effective to understand his movements. It’s his most important quality: a handling which is outstanding with very light break pressure and a profile which never rocks back . Result: a pure thermal-killer. Never any false movements. Break travel is almost 70cm and let her slow down until 26km/h. The Aspen3 flirts with an L/D of 9.1 . The speed system let her degrade really little until 50 km/h. With some rougher conditions the Aspen3 communicates a lot, in an explicit way, without getting tiring. When you want to do some Wagas, the Aspen3 is a real butterfly, a toy which makes you enthusiast.
Conclusion: The Aspen3 is on this moment my favorite glider of 2009. Excellent sports glider with a exceptional handling. A wing which you should absolute try in this category. But, attention a pilot is required!
En een berichtje van de Gradient -site:
Toby Colombe had a really good run in Piedrahita in the British Championship's 2nd round at the end of June. Toby flew consistently at a very high standard to win the Sports and Serial Class on his Aspen3. Toby said he was particularly impressed with the easy speed bar on the Aspen3 and the glider's good behaviour in the strong conditions. Gradient gliders took 8 of the top 10 places in the Sports Class in this round of the British Championsips. What a result!
